Mese (SO), in Valchiavenna.
It was at the beginning of the last century when my Grandparents
decided to dedicate their lives to what is now known as an
“agriturismo”.
They grew their own fruit and vegetables and produced
homemade hams, sausages and cheese, and, of course,
wine. They were lucky enough to have a natural fridge in a cavity
between the mountain rocks, "Crotto" in italian,
where the humidity and temperature were maintained by the
prevailing wind.
They started by offering their products to passers by, who often
stopped to enjoy a hearty meal in the shade provided by the
trees. I grew up admiring and helping my Father who replicated
the hospitality offered by my Grandparents. One memory which I
will never forget is the aroma of the “must”, or as yet
unfermented grape juice, which filled the air during the Autumn
months.
These days my sister runs the “Crotasc”
restaurant in the renovated building, where during the
summer you can still eat outside in the shade of the chestnut
trees, just like old times.
In the cave I have set aside the best years of
my Valtellina wines to rest, just as if it were my own personal
caveau. Here I look after the memories and history of my family.
